Music for mental wellness

Updated: 3 days ago

We have always heard people say that music, rains and window seats is the best combination ever. But does everyone believe it and how much of it is true? Music has always been a cure for negative emotions, but is it a mental health therapy too?

Just last year, there was a time in my life when I found it really difficult to even go through the littlest things during a day because I was extremely miserable. There was terrible negativity all around us due to Covid and lockdown and the social distancing which led to both physical and emotional distancing. It was then, when I became a depression patient and have been battling the disease since then.

During such difficult times, the one thing that not only doctors, but every person who knew about my mental illness recommended, was listening to music. Being a guitarist and a pianist myself, I have always been a fan of melodies and when the doctors recommended using music as a mental therapy, it was a rather easy task for me.

Listening to music is the thing which helped me get through the roughest patch of my life. It’s been more than 1 year now and I’m still battling the disease but simply a 10 minutes of music therapy everyday makes me feel really better and encourages me to not give up.

So, the answer to whether music can be considered as a tool for mental wellness, lies within the thoughts of the listener but for most, it has been even more helpful than medicines and other medical treatments.
